With the 117th Map of the Week, we look at the Market Tavern on the Market Square in the Slovanian city of Mine Docks. Tavernkeep Běla's tiny tavern is a popular stop, particularly with market shoppers. Most customers come in groups of friends and acquantainces to drink a single ale and chat a little. Then they go on their way. The average stay is about half an hour. The tavern also isn't open at night, when regulars tend to go to their favorite watering hole and spend hours there. Běla, a 59-year-old human female merchant, has the only permanent building on the market square. It isn't hers, really. It belongs to the city. She rents it on a long-term contract. The small tavern serves only the bottom-fermented ale that Běla brews in the communal brewery. She sells it for 2 copper pieces per pint/half-liter tankard. She opens the tavern daily at 11 bells (11 a.m.) and closes in the evening at 19 bells (7 p.m.). Běla serves no food, but she has no objection to customers bringing food in from the market stands and eating it, as long as they order a beer from the tap to wash it down. There is no table service. Customers must go to the tap to order their ale.Baron Luboš is not interested in whether some illegal items and contraband are sold by the market peddlers, but he wants the market square and the tavern kept trouble free. If someone begins to make trouble in the tavern, Běla simply pulls a cord that rings a bell in a second story dormer. After that, the watch will be in the tavern within a minute's time. People from all walks of life (the greater somebodies excepted) come to the tavern. Běla, a widow, lives alone in an apartment above the tavern.
